The Black Institute attended the May Day Rally on May 1, 2011 at Foley Square. Thousands of union members and supporters turned out to fight for immigration rights, workers’ rights, and jobs for all. Amongst the attendees were unions such as SEIU 32BJ, TWU Local 100, 1199 SEIU, AFSCME DC 37, and United Federation of Teachers. AIE’s Judith Hall spoke on behalf of NYC teachers who are facing job loss due to budget cuts that also affects Caribbean international teachers. The Black Institute’s Bertha Lewis also spoke as a representative of the Wal-Mart Free NYC coalition, conferring Wal-Mart’s anti-union policies.
